Dearfoams Slipper Boots

I’ve been dreaming about owning a pair of slipper boots ever since I saw Elizabeth Reaser (the one who is Esme on the Twilight movie) wearing them on the tv show Ex List that was cancelled a few shows in. She wore them everywhere on the television show, I wanted to wear them everywhere too. Then I began to scour the web for the perfect pair. Luckily I found my dream pair from Dearfoams, oh thank you Dearfoams and your perfect slippers, specifically ones in boot style.

dearfoam1

The style that I had in my head ended up being in their line up. The beige colored DF003 was easy to slip on and made my feet sweat with the warmth. The bottom sole is sturdy unlike many of the slipper boots out there, so you don’t have to fear about cold coming through.

I will fully admit I’ve worn these slipper boots out in public. Though they aren’t made for extensive outdoor use due to the suede outer lining, I still went outdoors with them and was very comfortable wearing them. I don’t mind sporting the comfortable look in public.

The slippers are slightly large. My feet can vary between 8.5 and 9, so I got the size 8-9 boots. The fit is loose around my calves and also loose on the feet. They do still stay on my tootsies well and I have never had them come flying off.

Check out Dearfoams new spring line and also make sure to look at their winter slipper sale which is 40% off all of the winter line!

Review: Bubble & Bee Organic Lotion Sticks

I get really dry skin in the winter. My hands get so bad that it’s painful, my legs are an itchy mess – and the constant spreading of lotion can get exhausting. Then there are the vast assortment of lotions, each with their pros and cons. Scented or unscented? How greasy will it leave my hands feeling? How long will it even last? And as a last caveat – is it good for me and the environment?

I recently had the opportunity to try the Coconut & Lime Organic Lotion Stick by Bubble & Bee – it’s like lotion for your hands, feet, whatever in a form you’d recognize as chap stick. Seriously. The first thing I noticed was that it smelled divine. Good enough that when I caught my two year old son smearing it into my desk while I was cooking dinner last night, my first thought was, “Please god tell me he didn’t eat it (He didn’t – and for the record, the cleanup was remarkably easy – if he’d done the same thing with a liquid lotion it would have been a disaster. Plus 10 points for the Organic Lotion Stick right there!).”

I’m not convinced that this lotion will cure the really bad dry skin out there, although I’ve heard that continued use will show results, I’m a skeptic at heart. My hands require a lot of work and still feel a little dry after applying the stick lotion – but they also didn’t feel greasy and I did notice that they hurt less than before applying. I’m toying with the idea that this might be more about hand maintenance than instant relief? At the very least, as a mid day, easy to carry anywhere solution, teamed with a more medicinal intense relief hand lotion in the morning and at night – I think it would be perfect. And for all you normal people with normal dry skin, I don’t think this can be beat. No messes, no oily residue – just good, sweet smelling lotion. I love the clever idea of a lotion in a stick, so much cleaner and quicker and really just fun. There’s a novelty there that amuses the child in me.

The grown up in me, meanwhile, is eating up that whole organic bit. No need to wonder what the strange foreign ingredients are. I think you can easily recognize organic beeswax, organic cocoa butter, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic sweet almond oil, organic lime essential oil, and certified organic coconut scent. The lotion stick contains no water, which means they don’t have to use synthetic preservatives, it doesn’t evaporate and wash off as easily as a bottled lotion would – and you’ll use less product, which means it will last longer, putting your $7.95 per stick to really good use. And that whole no preservatives thing is apparently a big deal – I didn’t know much about it either way before, but I read the following on the Bubble & Bee website:

Most lotions are 80% water with maybe 10% oil. Companies use chemical emulsifiers to make the water and oil combine, and synthetic preservatives are added to keep the water from growing bacteria. Even “natural” lotions aren’t really that natural because they’ve got at least an emulsifier and a preservative. Sometimes companies will go without preservatives so their label reads to be more natural. But that’s a problem, too. Now you’ve got a lotion that could be growing bacteria. What happens when you get that bacteria in a cut on your hand, or get it in your eye?

So, where does our lotion stick fall into all of this? On top, of course! Our 100% organic lotion stick poses no risk of growing bacteria. Bacteria and other pathogens can’t grow in oil. Because our lotion stick is 100% oil-based, there’s no risk of bacteria. Plus, you don’t have to pay for water. If your skin needs a little water hydration, pat some on and use our lotion stick afterwards. It’ll seal in the moisture and heal your skin a lot better than a bunch of chemicals would!

Bubble & Bee sells a lot of different products besides the super clever Lotion Sticks. I’m already eying their insect repellent for this summer and maybe some bamboo fiber towels… Basically, if you don’t want to spend hours drooling over fabulous organic products, I recommend avoiding Bubble & Bee, because I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to restrain yourself once you try them!

Bubble & Bee is offering our readers a discount at checkout! At checkout you can save $5.00 of an order over $20.00 by entering the promo code: review09 (expires 5/31/2009).

SimAnimals – Review and DS Giveaway

SimAnimals is the latest Sims game that reminds me greatly of the Pets Animals games. My daughter absolutely loves playing Pets Dogs 2 on the Playstation and Pets Horses on the Wii. SimAnimals was right up her alley! The game brings wildlife to life and has you feeding squirrels and entertaining the birds. I spent a good half an hour playing this game on our Wii.

The beginning was slightly irritating while learning each of the steps of the initial process. My seven year old got stuck on feeding the squirrels for quite awhile and did get frustrated. Once I walked her through the process, she was immediately satisfied and was able to continue the game without any further frustrations.

I found the graphics better on SimAnimals then I found then on the Pets Animals series of games. Though ease of play is certainly easier on the latter games.  SimAnimals does take quite a bit of time to learn the correct steps to accomplish your tasks. At least for me and Cay, it did!  I love the way that with the Wii controller the game becomes interactive. You must motion the controller for the animal to move, which is always really neat.

“Venture into the wild world of animals like never before. Embrace all the adventure, fun, and mischief that await you in the vast forest. Feed a bear what he craves. Pick up a rabbit or hedgehog, and bring him to his friends. Discover what other creatures lurk in the wild. You have the power to reach out and touch, pick up and move everything in the forest from squirrels and foxes to trees and flowers. Make your wild animals happy and maintain a forest that lets them flourish as you venture further into the forest than you’ve ever been before! Engage wild animals, experience life in the forest, and let your creativity run wild in SimAnimals™.”

College Inn Bold Stock and Culinary Broths: A-

New College Inn Bold Stocks and Culinary Broths have beautiful packaging, with vivid pictures and an easy pour spout. The flavors entice you with their delicious sounding names like Thai Coconut Curry. You can imagine yourself on a warm beach digging your toes into the sand while Buddhist monks in saffron robes chant in a nearby temple. The flavors, however, won’t take you to this wonderful place.

The Rotisserie Chicken boasts that it’s made with onion, garlic, and other spices, but the chicken overpowers any other tastes. This thick stock is definitely bold and could use a bit of watering down. It’s salty enough, but missing the full bodied flavor that pepper provides. There’s also a bitter, almost metallic, aftertaste that leaves you with cotton mouth. Overall, this stock wasn’t great as a soup but would taste excellent in mashed potatoes with butter and a good dash of pepper.

Beef Sirloin doesn’t taste like beef at all. It tastes dominantly like carrot with undertones of celery and beef. It’s definitely an earthy experience complimented by the woods aroma of freshly whittled wood, but not what I’d expect of a beef sirloin stock.

Thai Coconut Curry says it is chicken broth infused with a blend of coconut, curry, garlic and coriander flavors for an exotic and delightful touch from the at-home chef. Upon opening the package, there’s a wonderful lemony scent that smells sooo good. Unfortunately, it’s a very sour broth that kicks you in the mouth with spice. Lemon cleaning products and potpourri both come to mind. When used to make white rice as a bed for salmon, the flavor is muted and complimentary. It’s a good thing or this product would have gone down the drain.

Flavored with thyme, oregano and rosemary, White Wine and Herb is a chicken broth that adds delicious sophistication to meals. The flavor is true to its name and the taste is only slightly medicinal. The onion, garlic, and salt don’t overpower the wine. This is one broth to buy over and over again, as making anything with wine as an ingrediant isn’t easy.

Although they’re not great as stand alone products, New College Inn Bold Stocks and Culinary Broths add rich taste that provides intensity of flavor to sauces, stews and other favorite dishes; for reliable goodness you can depend on! In order of favorites, White Wine and Herb, Thai Coconut Curry, Rotisserie Chicken, and Beef Sirloin, are all great bases for meals and worth trying at least once.

Giveaway: Cupcakes Gourmet

Can you imagine anything better than having cupcakes delivered to your door? Last week I received a box of one dozen cupcakes from Cupcakes Gourmet. It’s been a delicious week. Cupcakes Gourmet began as a cupcake bakery in Pennsylvania (currently located in Malvern, PA Bakery – so if you live in the Philadelphia area be sure to check out their bakery in person. You can click here for the flavors available in the bakery which also sells gourmet teas and iced beverages).

Don’t live in Pennsylvania? Me neither. But don’t worry because you can also order their cupcakes online and have them delivered to your door. Click here for a list of the cupcakes available for purchase online. For under $60, including shipping, you can order two dozen (minimum online order) hand-made mini cupcakes – the perfect bite sized, guilt free cupcake for you and your children. Cupcakes Gourmet uses high quality natural ingredients with no trans-fats.

I loved my Gourmet Cupcakes. They were delivered in a cooler with dry ice packages keeping the cupcakes frozen until delivery. Thawing the cupcakes takes about 1-3 hours. Since they recommend eating the cupcakes within 24 hours of being thawed, we decided to only thaw one or two cupcakes at a time (enough for my husband and I to each enjoy one cupcake) and keep the rest in our freezer. This worked perfectly and over the course of the week we had cupcakes several nights. Each cupcake was as fresh and delicious as the one before it. I loved the concept of the mini cupcakes. I never felt like my diet was being ruined by a craving for a cupcake and while one mini cupcake was usually enough to quench said craving, you can eat 2 or 3 without breaking the calorie bank (my husband and his food scale estimated that each cupcake probably has close to 100 calories).

Want to win some Gourmet Cupcakes of your very own? We’re giving away one dozen cupcakes to one lucky reader. Here’s how you can enter to win:

  1. To be eligible to win check out the flavors offered by Cupcakes Gourmet’s online delivery and tell us which flavor cupcake you’d like to receive. You must do this to be entered into the contest.

Flowerz in Her Hair

my-pictures1

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t actually press my girls to be super girlie. Right now my seven year old is out riding her 4-wheeler with the boys! So I was excited to actually receive something that might help make my daughters have a more girlie appearance that would be easy to use. Flowerz In Her Hair helped do just that.

The hair accessory company was started by a mom of two boys who finally found out she was going to have a girl. Well, in all the excitement to buy things girlie she got very disappointed over the high prices of some boutiques and the low quality of the more reasonable priced headbands.  This mom decided to start making them herself and people fell in love! Then Flowerz in her Hair was created.

We got to try out a few of their products. My favorite of the bunch was one that suited my daughters very well, it was a white crocheted headband and a white matching bow. My husband when he saw it on our children declared “Why didn’t we know this company when we got married? This would have been perfect for the girls hair!”  I agreed. The white on white was fantastic and my daughter was not at all bugged by the headbands size.

One thing I specifically like about this line of hair accessories is that everything is interchangeable. The headbands have an area that you clip the bow onto. This is also great because for young children it protects them from getting hurt by the metal of the clip by cushioning the metal of the clip with a thick piece of fabric and your childs head.

I just know that I will be purchasing two of their beanie/flower sets (one for each daughter). Beanies are fantastic, and decorate them with a ribbon or a flower and I’m absolutely sold!

Want to buy a fantastic accessory for the little girl in your life? Head on over to Flowerz in Her Hair and check out their whole line.

Giveaway: See Kai Run (Urban Footwear For First Steps)

I don’t know about you but I’m always on the lookout for the perfect shoe for my son’s ever-growing feet. I want something that fits well and is healthy for his developing feet – and it’d be cool if they looked nice, too. It’s kind of sad to walk into the shoe department and see rows upon rows of pretty pink shoes for pretty pink-loving girls and about three options for your little boy. What if I don’t like options 1, 2 or 3? And are any of them the right shoe? Will they foster good foot development, be easy to run, jump and play in and last as long as his feet will fit them?

In 2002 Cause Haun gave birth to a little boy named Kai. In 2004 she created See Kai Run, a line of shoes (for boys or girls!) that match the description of my little wish list in the previous paragraph – they are healthy for developing feet boasting flexible soles, wide openings and plenty of toe box room (room for tiny toes to breathe and grow), and a leather lining that is breathable and durable. Not to mention that these shoes ooze style. I recently received a pair of Dominic shoes from See Kai Run for my two year old son and I was very impressed.

From the fun shoe box that my son commandeered for playtime, to the adorable shoes inside with an adorable sole featuring tiny little letters on tiny blocks, spelling words like jump, dance and dream (all of which they can do with ease while wearing these shoes). To put it simply, these shoes are fun! And they fit my son very well – I love that they are so thin and breathable, very easy to move around in, something that I have found is not common in a toddler boot. These are not the stiff, bulky boots that we so often find that make walking with him an even bigger pain than usual. These boots were made for walking and they’re so stylish! They have dozens of styles, with sizes ranging from infants to toddlers to 8 year olds.

Want a chance to win a pair for your own little one? We’re giving away a pair of shoes from either the See Kai Run (6 months – 3 years) collection or Smaller (0-18 months) collection to one lucky reader. Here’s how you can enter to win:

  1. To be eligible to win check out the See Kai Run collection or the Smaller collection and tell us which style shoe is your favorite. You must do this to be entered into the contest.
  2. For an extra entry, you can follow us on Twitter. Post a comment here with your Twitter username.
  3. For a third entry you can tweet about this giveaway or post about it on your blog and leave a comment here with either the URL of your post or your twitter profile.
  4. For a fourth subscribe to our RSS feed, leaving a link here to tell us you’ve done so. We’ll be posting more giveaways on Momma’s Review soon so subscribing will be a great way for you to stay informed about all the great things you can win in the days and weeks to come.
  5. For a fifth entry you can sign up for the See Kai Run email newsletter (sign up can be found on their home page). Post a comment here telling us you’ve done so.
  6. As a final entry donate $1.00 (or more if you’d like) to the I Heart Tucker fund. This can be done through PayPal and your donation would be greatly appreciated. Just visit I Heart Tucker and click on the donate button on the right sidebar, you can also enter raffles on the I Heart Tucker site with donations you have made!  Make sure to come back and tell us you donated.

This giveaway is open to all US and Canadian Residents (sorry international readers)!

The contest will close at 12:00 p.m. EST on Friday March 6th.

Want yet another chance to win a pair of shoes from See Kai Run? Cause Hun is celebrating the release of the new spring / summer line by giving away a pair of shoes from the Smaller or See Kai Run collections every day for the month of February!

Book Review: Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde

Grade: A +

It’s no secret that I love me some Jasper Fforde. His Thursday Next series just blows my mind every time with brilliant awesomeness. From the first book, The Eyre Affair, I was absolutely hooked and I’ve been devouring them ever since, most recently with book four, Something Rotten. These books have a little bit of everything – the literary references are never ending and wonderful, the worlds he creates inside and outside of literature is fascinating, detailed and wonderful even when absurd. There is a science fiction angle involving things like time travel, cloning, eradications and being able to jump inside (and out of) books. There are wonderful commentaries on religion, politics, marketing, big business and more. There’s even a love story thrown in for good measure.

It’s hard to go into great detail as any number of details from this book would be a spoiler for books prior to it – and you really don’t want any mysteries spoiled going into this. I will say that the Thursday Next series, while wonderful, is not as easy a read as the other books I typically read. I can usually read any standard book (okay fine, young adult and chick lit) in under a week. Thursday Next books take me at least two (the first one took me even longer, as I had to acclimate myself with Fforde’s hugely detailed plot lines, not to mention the complex world he’s created). But I love every minute of it. My husband frequently gives me strange looks when I laugh out loud in the middle of the night (when I should be sleeping but instead am up reading justonemorechapter) and has enjoyed several passages that I’ve quoted for him out loud when I just couldn’t stand keeping the brilliance to myself.

So if you like science fiction, literature, love stories, satire, and funny, intelligent plots with a never ending twist, I highly recommend the Thursday Next series, including but not limited to Something Rotten, book four.
