Allergaroo Ready Made Pasta Dishes

It seems lihttp://www.allergaroo.com/news/logos/images/Allergaroo_no_background.jpgke celiac disease is the new lactose intolerant. Growing up, doctors never mentioned cutting wheat, barley, and rye out of your diet, preferring to blame milk and cheese for an upset stomach. Now, times have changed and allergies to gluten, milk, soy, nuts, corn, eggs, potato, and fish are common. Allergaroo products are free of the 8 most common food allergens, plus some.

The country’s only allergy-free, gluten-free brand of ready-made dishes, Allergaroo is made with high-quality, all natural and GMO-free ingredients. The contents include rice pasta with a sauce made of tomato paste, vegetable puree, olive oil, sea salt, and spices. They’re low calorie, low fat, high protein, high fiber, and cholesterol free – all this in a microwaveable pouch.

There are three different varieties currently available – Spyglass noodles, Spaghetti, and Chili Mac. All of them are super easy to prepare – cut open the pouch, heat for a minute, and serve.

The Spyglass noodles are penne with ground chicken in the sauce. Unlike other rice pasta, this isn’t gummy or sticky. The soft, delicate noodles are delicious and you can really taste the spices (but there’s little to no hot spices).

The spaghetti noodles are a little al dente (slightly hard) and the sauce is a little thin. The flavor is full bodied and peppery, which more than makes up for it not being a chunky sauce.

As for the chili mac, it’s elbow pasta with chicken chili sauce and pinto beans. The noodles are harder than the spaghetti noodles, which isn’t pleasing. The flavor is great, and cooking it further might soften up the noodles. A very mild chili flavor with hints of tex-mex origins makes this a great dish for adults and children.

Mom-in-Chief by Jamie Woolf Review

mominchief

The Mom-In-Chief’s main declaration [to me] is:

“If you’ve ever thrown your hands up in frustration over a pesky toddler… then Mom-In-Chief is a must read!”

My toddler’s middle name might as well be trouble. I have recently learned that her pesky side comes from boredom. Having this knowledge is certainly helping our relationship but prior to this knowledge things have been difficult for me and her.  Though, I still feel like I need certain tools to help her and me.

Working Mother magazine is one of my favorite ones I subscribe to. I love reading about other professional mothers who thrive on business and family life.  During a recent issue of Working Mother they showcased Jamie Woolf’s Mom-in-Chief. I knew I had to give this self help book to try to incorporate my business skills with my home skills.

Mom-in-Chief states that it will help with things like:

  • How to maximize the learning opportunities that come from mistakes
  • How to stay connected with a pesky toddler or testy teenager
  • How to create rituals that strengthen the family’s esprit de corps
  • How to feel less like a maid or short-order cook and more like a skilled leader capable of unleashing the potential of others
  • When to step in and when to step back
  • Why working with your spouse or partner is crucial to executive function and team happiness.

I found this self help book to have some great tips. I felt, though, when Woolf began breaking down the type of parent you may be, called Mom Modes that it made me zone out. After taking the online test since the book version was too long and confusing it was determined that I am a: Foster Individuality – Liberators type parent. Which means that it is important to me to foster my daughters individuality and uniqueness. It seems I care more about that than I do about emotional attachment and achievement.

The best part of the book was hearing the stories of other parents’ experiences with their children. The stories explain what they did right and wrong. Also, they explain what could be done different next time. These made the biggest impact on me.

For business oriented moms who need help with running their households and raising their children the way they want them to be raised, Jamie Woolf’s Mom-In-Chief might be the must read. Purchase your copy today at Amazon for only $15.61.

Get Breakfast Perfection with Calphalon’s No Peek Waffle Maker

Apparently, there are waffle makers and then there are waffle makers. And I have just met the waffle maker of my dreams. To be honest, I never knew that my old waffle maker had any problems. It was cheap, tiny and made waffles with little complaint. A small light told me they were done and was usually right. It stored easily apart from that pesky cord. Calphalon’s No Peek Waffle Maker blows my old waffle maker out of the water.

First off, in a sleek stainless steel with a high performance non-stick interior, I’m not exaggerating when I say this waffle maker… it’s kind of sexy. If you’ve always imagined the stainless steel sleek kitchen of your gourmet dreams, this waffle maker will fit right in. It’s a bit heavier than your average waffle maker, but sturdy in a way you didn’t realize a waffle maker would be. Everything feels like it was made to perfection. And when they say non-stick? Basically they mean – you will never have to worry about cooking sprays again – it simply doesn’t need them. Trust me – I’ve made sure. Each batch will come out without complaint, no sticks guaranteed.

To use this baby, you’ll want to plug it in, then move the little knob to the heat setting of your preference – so if you like your waffles just perfectly browned, your husband likes them ‘Cajun style’ and your kid doesn’t want to see any brown whatsoever but still wants it cooked? No problem – with their OPTI-HEAT system you can tailor your waffles to your taste. When you turn the knob, you’ll know you are doing it right because the illuminated dial will light up to where you turn it, then it will go back and light to show you how hot the waffle maker currently is. This actually confused my husband at first because of the waffle makers auto off feature (which helps you conserve electricity) he turned the knob backwards for some reason which turned the waffle maker off instead of to medium. It wasn’t until I glanced at it and said, “Honey I think you did it wrong,” that he figured it out. Personally I love this feature and knowing the dial lights up makes it easy to be sure you’ve done it right. Once you’ve lined up that dial, it’s preheating, so you get exactly the right temperature for the perfect waffle. This is where you go mix your batter, wash some dishes, feed the dog – whatever that other thing you could have been doing if you weren’t in charge of watching to see when the waffle maker is warm enough – the waffle maker will make a dinging sound to tell you it’s preheated and sure enough, the light will be back to lined up with your heat setting. It’s time to cook.

I’ve tried both Bisquick standard waffles and the waffle recipe included in the Calphalon manual (the manual also offers some syrup recipes, too!). Each batch will yield two “waffles” but, with Calphalon’s whole wheat flour / all purpose flour / rolled oats blend recipe in particular, one waffle might feed a family of 2-4 people. The waffle maker’s “waffle” is divided into four sections (my old waffle maker only had two sections) creating four extra-large deep pocket Belgian waffles – which means you spend less time cooking and more time eating. And again, once you’ve poured in your batter you can go attend to your other responsibilities – it will ding again when your waffle is done.

* Word of warning * The Bisquick waffle mix is exceptionally runny compared to Calphalon’s recipe – I’m thinking you want to not put in quite as much batter as you would with the Calphalon recipe. Ours ran down out the edges and all over the waffle maker, making quite the mess to catch. While inconvenient, after we’d caught all those drips we still got perfectly cooked waffles and the mess cleaned up very easily. I think we just used too much batter, but my husband has declared that he’s madly in love with Calphalon’s recipe and has demanded them each time since, so I haven’t had a chance to test that theory.

Remember that pain in the butt cord that I mentioned my old waffle maker was aflicted with? Calphalon’s waffle maker is so easy to store – the bottom of the waffle maker has a notched storage space that you can tuck the cord around, essentially making that pain in the butt disappear. The waffle maker will also lock the top of the iron to the bottom, so you can store it on its side without it falling open – giving you two great storage options. We’re storing it in our lazy susan, laying flat, but only because the waffle maker is rather tall on it’s side and we have midget cupboards that offered no other options – not the first time I’ve wished for new cupboards!

The Calphalon No Peek Waffle Maker retails for $99 which is, I’ll admit, very expensive. But in my now ‘spoiled by waffle perfection stuper’ semi-professional opinion, it just might be worth every penny. I’d consider this an excellent gift for the chef or breakfast fanatic who has it all – this will be a fantastic contribution to their Dream Kitchen for sure! V-Motion Review and Giveaway

80-078800_prod_01

VTech makes educational learning products for children that allow them to interact, have fun, and learn all at the same time. Recently we received the V-Motion electronic gaming system and my children begged me the moment they saw the box to try this out. As soon as it was set up my seven year old jumped in to play. She chose the motion play that allows her to use her movements to move the on-screen player.

The game comes with the Action Mania sampler, so I did not have to immediately rush out and buy games for her. It included fun games such as car racing and tennis, which are some of her favorites on our Wii.

The new V-Motion also includes a USB adapter called the V.Link. V-Motion’s V.Link allows you to:

  1. Get plugged in! Use your V.Link to track your progress
  2. Connect the V.Link to your PC and you can play web games
  3. Compare where you rank against other V-Motion players
  4. Take advantage of bonus online gaming

The graphics are certainly not the clarity you would get on other gaming systems, such as the Wii, but this gaming system, for only $59.99 on Amazon, allows the children to move and play while playing video games.

We are giving away a V-Motion Active Learning System to one lucky reader. Here’s how to enter:

  1. Go to Vtech Kids and tell us what other product you would love to have for your family. This is mandatory, if not done all other entries will be null and void.
  2. For an extra entry, you can follow uson Twitter. Post a comment here with your Twitter username.
  3. For a third entry you can tweetthe following on twitter: “ @mommasreview Win a VTech V-Motion Active Learning System ($59.99) from Mommas Review. More great giveaways @ http://www.mommasreview.com” – be sure to post a comment here telling us you’ve done so.

  6. As a final entry donate $1.00 (or more if you’d like) to the I Heart Tuckerfund. This can be done through PayPal and your donation would be greatly appreciated. Udderly Smooth – Udderly Fantastic

One of my favorite bloggers, Jennifer from Rundpinne, informed me that the only lotion she uses is Udderly Smooth Udder Cream. Her family has very dry skin and Udder Cream is the only lotion that zaps the dryness. I trust my friends choices so I had to give this product a try.

udderly-smooth

I was able to try a few products from the Udderly Smooth line.

  • Extra Care Cream – Fragrance Free
  • Shea Butter Foot Cream
  • Udder Cream
  • Hand and Foot Lotion
  • Udder Cream is a non-greasy and stain free lotion that is thick but goes on smoothly. My skin immediately sucked in the lotion and felt dry and almost healthy! I did find the formula slightly greasy, but nothing extreme.

Both of my daughters have excema in the winter time. Their skin gets dry and very crocodile like, I’ve tried every single lotion I can think of to help ease their itchy arms and legs. We’ve now started using Udderly Smooth Udder Cream and Hand and Foot Lotion on them each day. The lotion seems to provide relief to their dry skin and I do not see as much itching.

My eldest daughter even requested that the Hand and Foot lotion be kept in her room for whenever she needs it! So now she has the adorable cow patterned lotion next to her bed for whenever she needs it.

The packaging itself sells me on the Udderly Smooth products, so it made me excited that the product inside was just as exciting. I will certainly be keeping Udderly Smooth products, especially the Udder Cream in my bathroom from here on out.

    Have you got WAT-AAH?

My children are avid sugary juice drinkers. My younger daughter will pick the sugary juice 9 times out of 10. And my older daughter would pick soda if I let her. We recently decided to take the WAT-AAH Challenge. Doesn’t that name in itself make you smile?

    watahh-challenge

So the major question from the WAT-AAH Challenge creators was:

“Will your kids choose water over soda?”

So I placed some sugary drinks in my fridge including soda products and sugary drinks like Capri Sun. In the midst of all these drinks I included two bottles of WAT-AAH. They were the blue bottled “Brain” and the pink bottle “Body.” Here’s why they are named this way:

Brain: Has ultra-pure water and electrolytes

Body: Is pure spring water with no sodium

The bottles are extremely entertaining with the catchy WAT-AAH name and the silly cartoon character declaring “Drink WATAAH” on the label.

Though WAT-AAH is visually appealing I thought for sure my children would chose their standard drinks of choice. Either soda or juice. Of course they do like water and will drink it, though it’s usually as a last resort if something better isn’t available.

I asked my eldest daughter to go to the fridge and pick out whatever drink she wanted for school. She opened the fridge while I pretended not to watch her. I could see her investigate the fridge and knew the moment she stopped on WAT-AAH because she laughed and leaned closer to check it out.

She immediately took it out of the fridge and said “I want this! What is it?”

I declared “WAT-AAH!” in my best ninja voice, because I feel like this water comes with a ninja kick. It helps kids make the right choices. In my house I would need a ninja to make them do that!

I think everyone should take the WAT-AAH challenge! Go check it out and see what your children choose.

Tale of Despereaux on DVD April 7th

despereauxI recently picked up the Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo and read the “Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread.” The novel had all the makings of a great story.  You fell in love with Despereaux almost immediately and enjoyed his voyage from a misfit, to falling in love,  to an outcast, and more.

I have a rule that when I watch a movie that was based on a novel I must read the book first. If I don’t do so, the book is pointless to read. My reasoning behind this is that a movie takes an hour or two to watch. A book takes a few days of enjoyment. There is no point in wasting the days of reading if you already know the ending from the movie. While on the vice versa if you read the book first you’ve had the enjoyment of the little things and the movie helps bring it to life.

When I received The Tale of Despereaux on DVD I was very excited to bring this story to life.  Amazon.com describes this video as:

“The Tale of Despereaux looks a little like Shrek. The storytelling and animation draw on everything from Ratatouille and classic fairytales to Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Indiana Jones, and, in its action sequences, even Bourne and Bond. But this movie stands on its own; too dark and violent for very young children, perhaps, but for the most part it’s exciting and funny, and it delivers a message about bravery and forgiveness that is relevant to us all. Voiced by Matthew Broderick, the title character is a little guy, even by mouse standards, with enormous ears and an imagination to match; much to the dismay of his elders, he “never cowers, won’t scurry, and refuses to be taught to be scared” (he’d much rather read a book than eat it, a pursuit that fills his head with visions of valiant knights, damsels in distress, and a life defined by “courage, honor, and decency”). ” – Amazon.com

The story is indeed a violent one, especially the novel which includes many instances of death and torture. Though, the movie spins the story to include the bare minimum of this dark side. It includes many of my favorite actors including Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson, and Tracy Ullman.  The comedic humor is made for children and adults, which makes it a great watch for parents and children.

This all star cast delivers a fresh and fun story that I would recommend to older children. This is a great family night movie, which is what we used it for. The Tale of Despereaux a Universal Studio movie is available on DVD starting April 7th, 2009.  You can also preorder this movie from all major retailers such as Amazon.
